Although in many respects there has been a change in recent decades, with more open discussion of homosexuality and the growth of the gay economy, there has developed the paradox that greater awareness has sometimes led to greater constraint. Hickson (1996) surveyed the sexual experiences of men who had been to public schools and found considerable evidence both of the former prevalence of homosexual activity among the boys and of a laissez-faire attitude among the staff. It was argued that if teenage boys were kept in a boarding school then such activity was inevitable.

G. Clarke and Clarke (1976) and Rutter (1972), which does not challenge the main thesis, about the importance of adults providing stimulus to the child, but modifies points of emphasis. One problem is that some mothers have felt themselves to be made scapegoats, so that if the child grows up to be backward or anti-social then it is seen that the mother is at fault. The reality seems to be that very young children need a few familiar people to relate to, but once these relationships are in place the ideal setting is probably that of an extended family.

Alongside this need for information there is also the requirement that the adolescent actively thinks through the possibilities, yet many, from laziness or fear, may try to avoid this process. Adults can help both in the school and the home in providing a forum in which discussion of the relevant issues is encouraged. Essentially the identity script is written by the young person himself, hence attempting to impose views and values is likely to be ineffective. The discussion has be free from threat so that even the most unorthodox ideas can be debated.
