I have known some of these fish to weigh well over a hundred pounds. The lucky man, after getting a prize like this, would immediately head for Athens and proudly exhibit his reward to the complimentary crowd that gathered around him. That is the way of all fishermen: to catch the big one. Ed was no different. On this particular afternoon Ed waded and swam, exploring across the river, leaving me behind on the bank. I was only about six years old and couldn't swim. Suddenly he called out to me to bring the rope across to him so he could tie the fish and hold it when it started trying to get away.

We now know, too, that Alton's gospel music background was more complex than he suggests here; he wrote numerous songs for the Athens Music Company, the gospel publisher located in his hometown, and his mother Mollie wrote a number of songs independent of Alton. We do not learn much about the very rich gospel music scene around Athens, one that produced the Speer Family, Statesmen singer Jake Hess, pianist Dwight Brock, and dozens of other figuresfigures Alton must have known and worked with.
The doctor we had was a country doctor. We would shell corn and Papa would pay him that way because we had no money. One day he came and said Ed would have to have some special medicine if he were to stand a chance against the insidious disease. My dad asked the doctor about the cost of the medicine and the doctor told him and then left. I could see that papa was extremely worried because he waited a long time after the doctor left before he said anything. He called Leonard and me out to the woodpile and asked us if we would go into town and try to get the prescription.
