But, even when this labor is visible, the issue still does not become relevant enough for European debate. It is unlikely that the traﬃc in women in all its ramiﬁcations will be on the EU agenda in the near future. After all, no family washes its dirty linen in public. Occident is here, however, to draw our attention to the existence of publics in which a debate on the traﬃc in women can be traced. There are aﬃnities among Romanians and Belgians or Italians, though they too were once structurally impossible matches.
It is aﬀect and sex-aﬀective labor that is circulated. The labor involved in aﬀective labor, as Michael Hardt and others have argued, has as its stakes the production of a relationship, in this case a marital relationship. There are serious limits to the parallel in the contemporary world, but one would have to ask, with Goldman, how this situation is both similar to and diﬀerent from prostitution. The prostitute does a lot of work—aﬀective work—before and during sex.
