Chapter 3 describes how Banda’s government appropriated women’s political dancing, transforming it into a mechanism for social control and for disseminating images of its legitimacy. Chapter 4 begins with an examination of the early 1990s, when women’s political dancing was a central issue during the campaign for the referendum vote and again during the campaign for the first multiparty elections, held in 1994.
