During the Thirty Years’ War many Jews served in the music corps of the various warring armies, playing primarily military music on woodwind and brass instruments. When they left the army they continued to perform many of the same tunes on the same instruments, thus influencing the Jewish repertoire. After the debilitating Thirty Years’ War and the cataclysmic Chmielnicki pogroms, the rabbis of Central and Eastern Europe imposed even stricter ascetic edicts on the Jewish community. The consensus was that the Jews were partly to blame for these tragedies, because they had strayed too far from the moral values and teachings of the Toyre and Talmud.

A Hebrew printing house was started and Jewish craft guilds (including the first klezmer guild, established in  with a violin on its shield) added splendor to the vibrant community. The Prague Jewish community became a state within a state and had a great deal of autonomy, which attracted more Jews, so that by  the community numbered two thousand, helping to spawn a golden age lasting into the mid-eighteenth century. There were thirteen synagogues in Prague, the smallest bigger than the largest in Frankfurt.
