A wheelbuilder can be master of his trade, but in the end, the quality of his work still depends on the selection of the rim. Rims, even though they are from the same company, the same model and the same quality, still have subtle differences. When they leave the production lines, rims are not radially circular. The rim profile is extruded from flat rod, cooled over rollers, cut to size, turned into the actual rim shape and finally their ends are joined. The rims are often not even perfectly flat.

We mechanics simply abhor too short or extending threads. Working out the correct spoke length used to be a game of chance. Time-consuming, complicated formula were hardly ever used and, instead, you just selected a certain length according to your experience and - if you were lucky - you got it right first time. On bad days you spent ages trying and testing two or three other lengths. But lately there's been a small boom in this area.
