Thus, they were not just soldiers; they were also teachers and ambassadors. In Vietnam, Sadler, who had trained as a medic, often found himself not only in the thick of the action, but reaching out and helping civilians who had been caught between the two opposing sides. He compassionately doctored the injured even as he viciously fought the enemy. In the midst of a confusing and unpopular war, Staff Sergeant Sadler thrived as a soldier until he was injured by a  THE BALLAD OF THE GREEN BERETS 41 booby trap.

A week later the Hutchinson Family, a musical ensemble, premiered “Battle Cry” in New York in front of a huge political rally at Union Square. The response was the same. “Rally Round the Flag” was an immediate hit in Chicago and New York. Within weeks of its publication, the song was being sung in churches and schools, at concert halls, and even by the men in blue as they marched off to battle. Many of the time credited the song, now commonly known as “The Battle Cry of Freedom,” with being one of the best recruiting tools of the Civil War.

Over the years, the song grew to mean so much to the Union cause that it turned the tide of real battles. On May 6, 1864, soldiers of the Ninth Army Corps were literally running for their lives from a Confederate assault. As they retreated, a voice was heard above the cannon fire, gunshots, and screams. One man boldly singing “The Battle Cry of Freedom” brought order to the chaos. The Union troops regrouped, turned around, and charged the enemy. As they fought to a decisive victory, they sang in unison Root’s anthem.
