After returning to the Republic he was appointed professor of mathematics and astronomy at the University of Leiden, and for his lectures used demonstration apparatus that was provided by Musschenbroek. 74 The fact that it was first used on a naval vessel was due to the Anglophile Admiral Hendrik Lijnslager, who was a relative of Visscher. The first octants for ships of the VOC were purchased from Musschenbroek, in 1741, and three years later four were bought from Benjamin Ayres. In 1747 it was decided that each Company vessel was to be supplied with an octant, together with printed instructions for use, which were written by Cornelis Douwes.
