Can beliefs be observed in action, or inferred from particular acts? Do we need a broad spectrum of methods? Discipline-Specific Epistemological Beliefs Much of the conceptual and empirical work on personal epistemology presumes that epistemological beliefs and theories are domain general. From the developmental perspective, this is congruent with the conception that each stage contains an integration and structured conception of ideas. Even in Schommer’s scheme, with dimensions that are more or less independent, there has still been an assumption, supported moderately in one study (Schommer & Walker, 1995), that beliefs are likely to vary little depending on the subject matter.

Perry’s work underscores the notion that the most powerful learning, the learning most faculty really want to see students achieve as a result of their experiences with classes/curricula, involves significant qualitative changes in the way learners approach their learning and their subject matter. Nine distinct stages, or what Perry prefers to call ‘‘positions,” as in positions from which to view the world, were discerned in the students’ common paths, although two, the first and the last, were hypothetical extensions of the empirical work, constructed for the sake of elegance and completeness.

His research focuses on the development of motivation, epistemological thinking, and self-regulated learning in adolescence. He has published over 100 articles, book chapters and books including co-authoring or co-editing 8 books.
