Hattie’s little daughter, a few months old, hung in a cradle and cried sadly. 15 “Yes, I am proud of her,” she said. We had already talked while sitting on the wagon, with her husband, a big, heavy, handsome Indian with a very friendly and not too serious look. 17 He did talk to his friend he had met the previous year, but found him halfway in bed. Tatsey has three tents, very close together. His own tent, where we will eat three times per day, grandmother’s tent and our tent, which is completely new.

Bear Chief is seated on our camp bed, a bit inclined against the wall. Uhlenbeck sits next to him. Tatsey is lying on the floor on the blanket in front of the tent opening with another Indian, a half-blood who is camping here for only a day with a few small children, a few big dogs and a young coyote. The small coyote is tied with a rope on the wagon and is very shy. Tatsey’s wife joins us for a while. C. Top row (left to right): Owl Child, Joe Tatsey, Bear Chief, Four Horns, Jack Miller, Mountain Chief.

We chat about them after they have walked away, watch them go for some time, and have our supper with Tatsey. Bacon, fried slices of liver & bread with tea. Bear Chief also entered Tatsey’s tent and also has his evening meal here when we are finished. Very soon afterwards he enters our tent. He wants to smoke and I give him two packs of tobacco. And then we have a very agreeable evening. Bear Chief is seated on our camp bed, a bit inclined against the wall. Uhlenbeck sits next to him.
