Developers and users expect two main advantages of business-object-based WfMS: (1) better reuse in other business information systems, and (2) better scalability and adaptability. These factors depend hardly on the underlying middleware. Therefore, the business object based architecture needs an appropriate distribution platform and an adaptable configuration management. In this paper, we present a generic and open workflow environment based on CORBA middleware. It uses business objects that encapsulate basic processing facilities and resources and uses CORBA-based open communication.

Possible ideas are to adaptively select the number of factories by defining events and performance conditions which might initiate the start or termination of factories . Further optimisations are possible by using non-exclusive resources. Such objects have to be able to handle a table of active tasks in order to allow for the parallel processing of jobs and in order to manage job priorities. The organisational model also has to be extended in order to reflect the real-world co-operation of organisations and organisational units more appropriately.

In our model, each replica is kept at a store. In principle, clients may perform read and write operations at any store where the document resides, that is where a replica is located. We distinguish three different types of stores: Permanent stores implement persistence of a GlobeDoc. This means that if there is currently no client bound to the document, the document will be kept only at its associated permanent stores. The permanent stores keep replicas consistent according to the object-centric coherence model that the document offers to its clients.
