That night the Marauders could hear more Japanese trucks pulling up and the tailgates slamming down as reinforcements jumped off. The next day, March 6, the Japanese began shelling the Marauders' position shortly after dawn and around mid-morning added medium artillery fire. Sergeant Andrew Pung of the Heavy Weapons Platoon climbed up a tree overlooking the position and directed mortar fire on concentrations of Japanese troops, until he was stunned by a tree burst. The men knew an attack was coming.

On March 2 1 , General Merrill ordered Colonel Hunter to take the 2nd Battalion's two combat teams, Green and Blue, and Khaki Combat Team from the 3rd Battalion, and set up a block along the Kamaing Road near the village of Inkangahtawng, about 10 miles south of Shaduzup on the Mogaung River and 30 miles from their current position. The 3rd Battalion's Orange Combat Team would block the trails to the south of the 2nd Battalion's approach route to guard against a Japanese flanking movement. Colonel Hunter's force descended from the mountain ridges to follow two small river gorges to their destination, crossing one river 25 times along the way.

The terrain was the most difficult the Marauders had yet encountered. To swing around the Japanese lines, the Marauders had to move into the western slopes of the Kumon mountain range, up and over a series of steep ridges that were a challenge to men and animals. The 2nd and 3rd Battalions would follow the valley of the Tenai River, which offered its own challenges and torments. On March 12 the 1st Battalion set off on its trek to Shaduzup. Two days later the battalion's Intelligence and Reconnaissance Platoon, under Lieutenant Sam Wilson, ran into a stubborn Japanese force blocking the trail along the intended route.
