Nathanael Greene, the man who had organized Washington’s northern Continental army’s logistical affairs. As quartermaster general, Greene had created an effective supply system under poor circumstances. What he would find in the South would be far worse. As soon as he reached North Carolina, he began to study the landscape. By mid-December 1780, his grasp of the river system was remarkable. His understanding of the strategic situation was even better. The combination of supply shortages and what he perceived to be an opportunity caused Greene to divide the army.

Despite his known aversion to councils of war, Greene called a meeting of his principal commanders that afternoon. ”41 Greene organized a light corps to serve as both a decoy and a blocking force to delay and harass Cornwallis’s army, thereby allowing the American main force time to reach the Dan. The first thing was to build up the strength of the Flying Army companies that had been worn down by the Cowpens campaign and subsequent marching. 42 Greene intended to give this command to Morgan, but upon his leaving the army, the honor went to Col.

He smashed the Tories and then burned a Tory post at Williamson’s Plantation, a short distance from Ninety Six. He then retired to Morgan’s main camp, followed by Col. Andrew Pickens with his South Carolina State Troops. In one stroke, Morgan had exacerbated the problem posed to Cornwallis when Greene divided his forces, and he also “spirited up the people” enough to bring militiamen rallying to his camp. ”13 On 17 January 1781, Tarleton caught up with Morgan at the Cowpens, a well-known crossroads with adjacent springs and some forage.
