Ecclesiae’ Prideaux and other writers of that time had proved the visibility of the Protestant church (and therefore of the Church of England) ‘no otherwise . . then by looking for it into the scattered conventicles of the Berengarians in Italy, the Waldenses in France, the Wickliffists in England, & the Hussites in Bohemia’. Heylyn reported that he disliked this trend, as undermining the episcopal succession, and therefore ‘rather chose to look for a continued visible Church in Asia, Aethiopia, Greece, Italy, yea, and in Rome itself, as also in all the Western Provinces then subject to the power of the popes thereof’.

If Laud was not yet the prime mover in Heylyn’s advancement, however, Heylyn now proceeded to make what would appear to have been his most audacious bid for Laud’s support, and (apparently) his most determined break with his past. This was his assault on the puritan Feoffees for Impropriations. The feoffees were a trust established by leading puritans to buy impropriations, advowsons and leases of tithes, and to bestow them on godly ministers. Depending on one’s perspective, this might be applauded as a voluntary organization which raised money through charitable donations to supplement the stipends and raise the quality of the church’s ministry.
