If that doesn’t work, close your mouth and pinch your nose, then try to exhale gently through your blocked nose. This technique will push a small amount of air toward your ear canal and equalize the pressure. It sometimes helps to wiggle your jaw back and forth as you push air against your blocked nose. You may need to repeat this as the parachute descends, and then again on the ground. The trick to controlling pressure buildup is to equalize pressure early and often. After a few skydives, the process of equalizing will become almost automatic.
Without a drogue the extra weight of the tandem pair would cause them to accelerate to 180 mph. That extra speed does not offer a very good training experience, and parachute openings at 180 mph are uncomfortable for the jumpers, and taxing on the equipment. The drogue is initially stowed in a small pocket on the bottom of the parachute rig, where the instructor can easily reach it. Often a student will not feel any difference after the drogue has been deployed. Tandem freefall speed is controlled with a drogue.

Yet, when you examine skydiving programs they can be broken down into the three basic styles of training: tandem, static line, and AFF (harness-hold). Each style of training has unique benefits, and one of them will probably appeal to you.
