For two months after the execution of this instrument the Indians seemed to act in good faith, and were apparently making preparations to carry out its provisions. The war was believed to be at an end. The volunteers and militia were mustered out of service; the four regiments of artillery were about to be removed to more comfortable quarters; and numbers of the settlers returned to the homes from which they had been driven.
