After an unusual fire or incident, a fresh pot of coffee is made, and the officer of a truck or engine company will have the firefighters critique it: Who did what? Could we have done it safer? Faster? Better? When you leave the firehouse after a day or night tour, you feel good about yourself. You might have helped save someone on that tour, or put out a fire. Over the years, I have seen firefighters approach greatness with their courage and daring. Firefighting is a team effort; if one firefighter fails to properly do his or her job, injury or death could occur.

Finally, you can apply to become a smoke jumper. There are currently approximately 2,200 firefighters who work as part of a hot shot type-one team and about 360 smoke jumpers nationwide, with several thousand type-two firefightersthose who are not on the front-lines. Timo Rova, a smoke jumper who works out of Montana, explains the exciting role of a smoke jumper. Smoke jumpers parachute out of airplanes to fight fires where no ground access is available. We carry heavy packs of supplies and stay out on the fire for up to three days before new provisions are dropped in to us or we leave the area.

Other interesting jobs that use their expertise can be found in trade associations, testing laboratories, and at colleges and universities. Typical Minimum Requirements Fire protection engineers have a more advanced educational background than firefighters that typically includes a bachelor of science degree in a traditional engineering field or in fire science and often a master's degree in fire protection. Since the job demand for fire protection engineers far exceeds the number of qualified candidates, many companies actively recruit on the college campuses that offer fire protection engineering degrees.
