I contribute to such metacritical investigation by considering the continual instability of the ‘object’ of study. ’ The aim of this study is to show how each editorial project and subsequent critical body of work shape the Dickinson text and, as a consequence, the figure of Dickinson, in important ways.

The analysis of these environments will only yield to an applied textual criticism. ’ But rather than simply critiquing the censored edition or the critical responses based on that text we can understand them as part of the literary text’s critical history, part of its ‘composite’ meaning—as part of how Dickinson’s texts have been understood. To this effect Gary Waller writes [ . .

But the establishing of Emily Dickinson as a key writer for New Critical methods was not a simple affair by any means. Feminist criticism, in particular, has challenged the unselfconsciously heterosexist vocabulary employed by these male New Critics in their production of Emily Dickinson and her work. Such criticism also reveals how difficult it was for critics to move beyond the biographical bias that New Criticism in theory rejected as part of an old fashioned study of literature as literary history in a limited sense of the life of authors.
