The Quileute people are repeatedly associated with the land, and their wolf form makes them a part of the natural world of the Olympic Peninsula.

Disputes over the land simmered during the second half of the twentieth century and came to a head in 2005, when two Quileute people who were collecting firewood on the disputed area were arrested and charged. Although the charges were later dropped, this incident, together with an increased awareness of the dangers of tsunamis in the area (over half the reservation is on a floodplain), led the Quileute people to take more drastic action. They denied access to Second Beach by closing the parking lot and trail, both of which are Quileute territory, in order to bring the other party to the table.
