Schools and shops closed so crowds could cheer the festivities. As they watched, a horse galloped across the span pulling Emily Roebling in an elegant carriage. In her arms, she held a crowing rooster as a symbol of victory. With a fireworks celebration that dazzled thousands, the Brooklyn Bridge opened to the public. President Chester A. Arthur strolled across the bridge with huge crowds watching from both sides of the river.
