Production (CP) of HA. Agglomerates are formed during the precipitation stage of the amorphous calcium phosphate. 7 μηι. However, whilst this is a substantial reduction in particle size, agglomerates of up to 20 μνη in size are still present. These agglomerates persist through the subsequent ceramic powder processing stages to produce large inherent pores and flaws. Improvements in the mechanical properties of HA will be achieved only if control over the quality and nature of the HA powder particle precursors is obtained.

Clearly, the limitations of the test conditions make it difficult to project these result to in vivo systems. The correlation between the in vitro response of bulk Bioglass® and its in vivo behavior is well documented. These results suggest that there may be very different responses in vivo to particulates of very different sizes. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The authors would like to thank Mike Robinson, Keith Lobel and Geri Greenspan for the technical assistance during this study.
