It is important to know your values so you will be able to motivate, support and direct yourself at the deepest level. A soldier that values life and freedom may do all he can to keep from going into a combat zone. I was told of one NCO who went to Desert Storm, jumped from the top of a van and broke his leg, so he could return home. There is no Page 8 better way to bond people, than to align them through their highest values. Discovering your soldiers values is simply a matter of finding out what's important to them.
This is something only you can do. If you truly know yourself, you will be able to form a relationship with your boss and soldiers that can make you the successful leader you want to become. You can be a leader that can train soldiers for war and accomplish the unit, Army and national objectives. Your superior wants a person of leadership skills who: Page 4 Will have order within his formation during his absence Can be trusted to get the job done Can care for his soldiers Will instill the values and beliefs similar to his own A soldier wants a leader who: He can look up to He can respect and who will respect him Will reward him when he meets or exceeds the standards of the mission Will discipline him when he is wrong Will stand up for him when he needs the support Will train him so he is able to accomplish any given mission, and, at the same time, accomplish his personal objectives Most of all, soldiers want a leader that is competent, skilled, proficient and able to make sound decisions under stress.
It is the ability to use tact to get your point of view across and, at the same time, accept the decisions of your leaders, as long as they are legal and proper orders; even if you do not personally agree with them. Competence is proficiency in required professional knowledge, judgment and skills. If you do not know your job, believe me when I say your soldiers will be the first people to know it. If you do not know the things your job requires for you to know, by all means, do not hesitate to seek assistance from someone or break out the manuals that will help you learn your job.
