One expects ~ fortiori that carbon does not dissolve to a significant extent in the boron-rich phases described in the previous section. Boron, on the other hand, can replace a fraction of the carbon atoms in the refractory MeC carbides, although the octahedral environment of the non-metal atoms in MeC is not exhibited by borides (the earlier reported NaCl-type phases TiB, ZrB and HfB do not exist). Thus, there appear to be considerable possibilities to modify the properties of MeX carbides (and also nitrides) by alloying with boron.

5 mm balls, ·after a short time of shaking, an equilibrium state is reached where straight rows of balls are replaced by statistically bent files and ranks of balls with g-values unlike zero. An example was found in metallic Fe-AI compounds. The metallic Al- atoms have a diameter Rl 5% larger than R Z of the Fe-atoms. If 13 atom percent of Al statistically are inserted into the Fe-lattice, g-values occur and were observed with a value not too far away from the theoretical: (Z9) 46 CRYSTAL STRUCTURE AND CHEMISTRY Fig.

The accurate structure determination of W3 2 and Ru 2 Ba reported in the previous paragraph has confirmed that the stacking sequence in these phases is ••• and ~~'~~'~~'~~', respectively. Thus, no flayers occur in these borides, as previously suggested for WB 2 and also ReB 2 and Mo 2 BS • The structures of A1B 2 , Ru 2 Ba and WB 2 are illustrated in fig.
